Prof. José Antonio de la Peña

Nationality: Mexican


Professor José Antonio de la Peña, from México, is the Deputy Director for Scientific and Academic Development of CONACYT, the National Council for Science and Technology of Mexico and Professor of Mathematics at the Institute of Mathematics at the Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México (UNAM), where he is researcher since 1986. From 1984 to 1986 he held a postdoctoral position at the University of Zurich.Professor de la Peña was President of the Mexican Mathematical Society (1989-1990), President of the Mexican Academy of Sciences (2002-2004) and Director of the Institute of Mathematics at UNAM (1998-2006). The main research area of Professor de la Peña is algebra. He was distinguished with the TWAS Prize (2002) and the National Prize in Science of Mexico (2005).

Prof. Sandra Diaz



Nationality: Argentinian














Professor Sandra Diaz from Argentina received a Doctoral degree in Biology at the National University of Cordoba. An Associate Professor at the Department of Biological Diversity and Ecology of the same University Professor Diaz has a Senior Permanent Research Fellow (Principal investigator) of the National Council of Scientific and Technical Research (CONICET). She is the Leader of the Inter American Collaborative Research Network on Functional Biodiversity and Sustainability (IAI CRN II) and is a member of the Scientific Steering Committee of the IGBP Global Land Project. Professor Diaz is an active member of DIVERSITAS, a Review Editor for IPCC, Coordinating lead Author in the Millennium Ecosystem Assessment, and is Chief Editor in the Journal of Vegetation Science, official journal of the International Association for Vegetation Science. Her main research interests are: terrestrial plant community and ecosystem ecology, functional biodiversity, plant functional types, links between functional biodiversity, ecosystem processes and ecosystem services, global change ecology, comparative ecology of plant traits. She has been awarded with the 2002 Guggenheim Fellowship, the Award "Lorenzo Parodi" of Argentine Society of Botany and is a member of several scientific societies.

Prof. Juan. A Asenjo


Nationality: Chilean






Professor Juan A. Asenjo, Vice President and Foreign Officer of the Chilean Academy of Sciences, is a chemical engineer from the University of Chile. A PhD from University College London (1978), Professor. Asenjo was awarded the National Science Prize in 2004. His research work in the Biotechnology field is reflected in 160 international scientific publications, 4 international patents and 4 books edited. He has supervised a large number of PhD students (44) in the USA, England and Chile and has had 12 postdoctoral fellows in his laboratory. He was Associate Professor and Director of the Biochemical Engineering Laboratory at Columbia University (New York, 1980-1986) and created such a laboratory in the University of Reading (Reader) in England (1986-1994). He is a member of the Editorial Committee of six international scientific journals in biotechnology and bioengineering, and the only engineer ever to obtain a Presidential Chair in Sciences (1997). He is an active member of IANAS and participates in the Long Term Programmes Committee of IAP.

Prof. Enrique P. Lessa


Nationality: Uruguayan

Professor Enrique Lessa from Uruguay is a member of the science faculty of the University of the Republic in Montevideo. He holds a PhD from the New Mexico State University and did post doctoral studies at the University of California. His main line of research is in the fields of Biological Sciences and Zoology, acting in the areas of Mammalogy and Evolution. In 2004 Professor Lessa became a corresponding member of the National Academy of Sciences of Argentina.

Prof. Mahabir P Gupta

Nationality:Panamenian



Professor Mahabir Gupta from Panama received his Doctoral degree in Pharmaceutical Sciences from Washington State University. He currently serves as the International Coordinator of the Ibero-American Program of Science and Technology for Development (CYTED) Natural Products Drug Recovery Program, as a Research Associate with the Smithsonian Tropical Research Institute, and as executive Director of the INTERCIENCIA Association. Professor Gupta is the recipient of the AAAS Award for International Scientific Cooperation. He is honored for his continuous efforts in the promotion of international scientific cooperation in the Ibero-American countries and for the study and utilization of biodiversity as a source of novel pharmaceuticals for the benefit of all people.

Prof. Elena Vigil


Nationality: Cuban

Professor Elena Vigil from Cuba is Full Professor for Solid State Physics at the Physics Faculty and researcher at the Institute of Materials Science and Technology, both at University of Havana (UH). She holds a PhD in Physics from this University and MA degree in Physics Teaching from Farleigh Dickinson University, USA. She is President of the Solar Energy Cathedra (UH) and also, of the Havana Delegation that belongs to the NGO Cubasolar. Her present research activity is devoted to solar energy, in particular, new solar cells materials and structures. She is a "distinguished member" of the Cuban Academy of Science.

Prof. María del Carmen Samayoa


Nationality:Guatemalan


Professor María del Carmen Samayoa, from Guatemala and president of the Guatemala Academy of Medical,Physical and Natural Sciences, is Biochemical specialist with a Masters degree in Toxicology . She has dedicated her career to Applied Research. As a result of that, she has presented 89 publications in International Scientific Journals. She has also made two chapters in food storage book. Is also a Committee member of COGUANOR (for accreditation of laboratories), and laboratory auditor for ISO 17025.As a teacher, she has worked in two of the most distinguished universities of Guatemala. Active member of the National Council of Science and Technology. In the present, she is a member of ICSU Regional Committee for Latin America and the Caribbean. Secretary of the Caribbean Scientific Union Board, and member of the Executive Committee of IANAS.

Prof. Tara Dasgupta






Nationality:Jamaican


Professor Tara Dasgupta, President of the Caribbean Academy of Sciences, has been attached to the Department of Chemistry at the University of West Indies Mona for close to thirty years. Professor Dasgupta obtained his PhD degree from the University of Calcutta, India and did postdoctoral research at the University of the Buffalo, at Boston University, U.S.A., and University College London , U.K. Elected Fellow of the Royal Society of Chemistry and of the Caribbean Academy of Sciences, Professor Dasgupta has nearly 120 research publications in top international refereed journals and has supervised 40 PhD and M.Phil students. He received the Vice-Chancellor's award, Principal's award and the Jamaican Society of Scientists and Technologists award for his outstanding research work.
